CLOSING COMMENTS

Featured Keynote Speakers:

Ann Crittenden is an award winning journalist, author and lecturer. Ann’s most recent book “If you have raised kids, you can manage anything” has received critical praise and was featured in People magazine. An earlier book, “The price of motherhood,” is already being called a classic. Ann will be speaking on work and motherhood in the 21st century.

Dr. Tina Miller, professor of sociology at Oxford Brookes University in the United Kingdom, has an international research, publication and consulting profile. Tina’s most recent book “Making sense of fatherhood: Gender, caring and work” is based on a qualitative longitudinal study examining men’s experiences of anticipating and witnessing the birth of their first child. This study will form the basis of her invited presentation.

Lisa Ann Ross is a theatre artist, educator and community arts practitioner and creator of Solo Chicken Productions. Lisa is currently based in Fredericton New Brunswick Canada. She will be performing a one-woman cabaret exploring some of the explosive themes surrounding motherhood.

Dr. Gina Wong, associate professor of psychology at Athabasca University in Canada, has been a valued invited speaker at past M.O.M. Conferences in NY City. Her recently published edited collection “Moms gone made: Motherhod and madness, oppression and resistance” emerged from the success of the 2009 Conference. Gina will be discussing how mothers are able to reform past notions of “motherhood.”

Other keynote speakers and performers will be announced as they are confirmed!

A “New” Motherhood?: Evolving Policies, Practices, and Families Conference asks: What factors, past and present, inform our “new” ways of understanding motherhood, fatherhood, and notions of family? Conference presenters will share papers that provide critical insights into mothering, fathering and family issues; that draw direct links between theories and/or research findings; or that offer practical approaches to issues facing contemporary mothers and families. The overarching goal of this conference is to provide an environment to explore new ideas and approaches for tackling issues that concern mothers as well as important others who fill a care giving role in the family. Examples of topics include, but are not limited to: global reproduction; birth practices and rituals; histories of family formation; the “new” fatherhood; changing public policy on maternal care; co-parenting ideologies; activism and motherhood; cross-cultural perspectives on the meanings of motherhood; literary and media representations of the changing figure of the mother; and public health perspectives on motherhood and pregnancy.

We have accepted submissions from scholars, students, activists, artists, community agencies, service providers, journalists, mothers and others who work or research in this area. Cross-cultural, historical, and comparative work is encouraged. We have also encouraged a variety of types of submissions including individual academic papers from all disciplines, proposals for panels, creative submissions, performances, storytelling, visual arts, film, music, audio and other alternative formats.

All submissions have been peer reviewed. Following the conference, a selection of papers will be considered for a published, edited collection.

DEADLINE HAS PASSED but conference attendance is open to the public: The proposal form can be found on the Museum of Motherhood website: http://www.mommuseum.org/apply/  All submissions must include a title, and a maximum 250-word abstract for individual papers, panels, other submission types (e.g., performance, media, music). Additionally, panel submissions must add short (50-100 word) abstracts of the individual papers that will be included in the panel. Conference registrants are invited to submit ONE presentation proposal.

Conference will be held at: Museum of Motherhood, 401 East 84th Street, New York, NY

Fee to participate: $150 (payment link)
